Dixon

I am a doula, sculptor, and teacher. My artwork is constructed with scrap materials, yucky things that most people pass on the street, and say "Ew, gross"! Through the use of ordinary disposable objects, my work is accessible to the general public. People who don't usually make art are able to participate without trepidation, due to the everyday nature of the materials. For example, "Lost Soles" is a raft that I constructed from flip-flops and plastic bottles. The successful launch across the Cape Fear River was witnessed by a crowd of people who had assisted the project by donating flip-flops and cheered me on as I made the voyage.

In July of 2006, close friends asked me to serve as a doula at the birth of their son. I had no idea what a doula was, but was honored by their confidence in my ability. The birth was awesome, and completely transformative. I received my doula training through ALACE in the Spring of 2007, and have been attending births ever since.

I am independently self-employed. I work for you, not for your care provider or chosen health care facility. I provide physical, emotional, and educational support. My job is to help you have a satisfying birth as YOU define it. We will get to know each other a few months before your baby is due. Together we will write your birth plan.

I will be on call, 24 hours a day, two weeks prior to your delivery date, until the baby is born. I will provide continuous support during labor, meeting you either at home or at the hospital. Your partner and I will coach you in pain relief techniques, such as breathing, massage, and laboring positions. After the birth, I will remain with you for one to two hours, unless you are comfortable and your family is ready for private time together. I also provide two postpartum visits, a home cooked meal delivered to your home, and unlimited email and phone support.

I look forward to working with you!
